LAFAYETTE, La. – Today, Lafayette Radiologist Dr. Gary Mathews voiced opposition to recent developments regarding U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) mammography recommendations. Mathews has sided with medical organizations including the American Cancer Society, the American College of Radiology, the Society of Breast Imaging and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network by taking a stance against these new recommendations.
“I feel it most important to express my concern and strong disagreement regarding the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) Mammography Recommendations,” Matthews said. “With a practice based on standard guidelines set forth by the most reputable and recognized medical organizations, I must stand against the recommendations, which are erasing advances that have attributed to major life savings in our nation.”
The controversial recommendations included direction against: Routine screening mammography in women age 40-49; the teaching of breast self-examinations; and clinical breast examinations. Instead, the USPSTF recommends restricting screening to women 75 years or older and annual screening mammograms for women age 50-74. The reversal of these accepted practices could reverse an almost 20-year decline in breast cancer morbidity and mortality, causing undue suffering to women and their families.
Mathews continued, “I stand not only with the medical organizations whose research and expertise refute this dismissal of protocol based on scientific studies and data analyses, but with the women whose lives as breast cancer survivors have made Acadiana a better place to live.”
