DHH plans three-day LaCHIP enrollment blitz in Jefferson, Plaquemines Parishes

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has planned an “enrollment blitz” from Thursday, June 4, to Saturday, June 6, in an effort to increase the number of eligible, local children who receive medical coverage they need to lead healthier lives. Teams of DHH employees and community partners from around the state will spread throughout Jefferson and Plaquemines Parishes to assist families who wish to insure their children through LaCHIP, the Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program.

“Our blitz initiatives have proven to be an important tool when it comes to enrolling eligible children for this valuable program,” said DHH Secretary Alan Levine. “With more than 62,000 children statewide still uninsured and estimates of thousands of uninsured children in the New Orleans and Jefferson area, there is still more work to do. Even one child without access to quality health care is too many.”

During the outreach event, blitz team members will distribute applications and increase awareness about the low- or no-cost health insurance program for children. These mobile units will make stops at businesses, churches, day care centers, grocery stores, banks and community centers throughout the area. The public is invited to visit with LaCHIP professionals, who will set up on-site stationary locations throughout the area to update information on active enrollees, answer questions about LaCHIP and other Medicaid programs, renew applications and perform on-the-spot qualification for new applicants.

LaCHIP, which covers children until age 19, is among the best known of the Medicaid programs that help insure children. Part of the federal government’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), LaCHIP pays for physician visits, pharmacy costs, hospital stays and many other medical expenses in a network of providers.

During blitzes and other outreach events, DHH employees check all applications not just for LaCHIP eligibility, but for all Medicaid programs from which a family could benefit, including the LaCHIP Affordable Plan, a new program launched in 2008 to cover children in households earning an annual income up to 250 percent of the federal poverty rate (or about $55,000 for a family of four).
