The Work of Arthur Ganson

The Art Department at BBR recently attended the Creative Summit in San Marcos, Texas. The Creative Summit is a long weekend designed to inspire and we return every year with our creative batteries charged, ready to do some killer work.

This year we were privileged to meet some extremely talented people including sculptor Arthur Ganson.

Arthur’s kinetic sculptures, shared with Summit attendees via short video presentations, were mesmerizing. His daVinci-esque machines — all metal and gears — moved in beautifully serene and unpredictable ways. Some made you laugh, others made you think — and there was one that made us all blush.

I left his presentation viewing  the world a little differently and I’ll certainly never look at a violin the same way again.

Cathi Pavy honored with Silver Medal Award and Denise Gallagher receives Art Director of the Year at Acadiana Advertising Federation’s 2010 ADDY Awards.

Day in and day out, the BBR Creative staff bears witness to the tireless efforts put forth by Partner and Creative Director Cathi Pavy. Whether we’re concepting alongside her to develop memorable creative or strategically assembling in-depth integrated branding campaigns, we reap the benefits of Cathi’s sheer versatility, which has proven instrumental to us as an agency. And following the Acadiana Advertising Federation ADDY Awards ceremony, held Feb. 26 here in Lafayette, it’s clear there is consensus among the Acadiana advertising community when it comes to recognizing her contributions.

BBR Creative would like to congratulate Cathi for taking home top honors from this year’s ceremony in the form of the AAF’s prestigious Silver Medal Award, the highest honor the AAF can bestow upon an advertising industry professional. In a tribute speech and video honoring Cathi, she was lauded by friends, family and colleagues (including a few inspirational faces from her past) for her creative excellence, commitment to social responsibility and achievements garnered working in this field we so love.

Right brain. Left brain. Can we meet somewhere in the middle?

I have been a right-brainer since birth. Every single personality test I’ve taken confirms this. My decisions are based on intuitive thinking — knowing without reasoning. As a businesswoman, I’ve struggled with this. And during the early years at BBR, I consciously made great strides to change myself with a daily dose of affirmations: “I am organized. I am organized. I must keep this receipt. I must keep this receipt. I understand this balance sheet. I understand this balance sheet.”

Perhaps the affirmations worked. Or perhaps it was my intuitive thinking in action. But I have always understood that great success comes when you have both left- and right-brain thinking — that meets somewhere in the middle.

This thought was confirmed recently when I heard Roger Martin speak at the American Institute of Graphic Arts Conference in Memphis. Martin is currently the dean of the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto and has written and published several books related to business.

Martin compared analytical-driven businesses to intuitive businesses. Analytical types are driven by statistics, research, systems and procedures. All of which are important components when building success. However, the downside is when a business is held within the confines of systems, no new ideas emerge. Martin mentioned no new inventions have ever come from the “prove it” theory. On the flip side, intuitive businesses have tons of great ideas and innovations but they falter in their lack of system to enhance productivity and increase profitability.

Martin’s solution? Meld the two together. A business that combines right-brain innovators with left-brain taskmasters — has the perfect business model that Martin calls design thinking. It is essential for the growth and sustainability of emerging businesses as well as established businesses.

The bottom line: Get your systems in place. Let your innovators think. And meet somewhere in the middle. And in case you were wondering, I can properly evaluate a balance sheet and I get my receipts in on time — sometimes. But I’m still not very organized.

Learn more about design thinking in Martin’s book, The Design of Business: Why Design Thinking is the Next Competitive Advantage.

Field Trip: Blackbird Letterpress

Filed under: Creative Corner — Cathi Pavy @ 1:44 pm

Every so often, the BBR Creatives pile into my 4Runner for a good old-fashioned road trip. It makes for a lovely getaway with a purpose — and provides for a nice creative experience beyond the white walls and Mac screens that make up our art department. This past Friday, we set our sights eastward, venturing across the Atchafalaya to Baton Rouge where we paid a visit to Kathryn Hunter over at Blackbird Letterpress.
