Business tech training through SBET: Proof there is such a thing as a useful freebie!

Filed under: General, News & Views, noted... — Sara Ashy @ 3:16 pm

I must admit I’m just like the rest of you. If I hear about an offer that sounds too good to be true, I immediately dismiss it as “too good to be true.” I have learned this lesson the hard way — usually relating to some type of exercise equipment that promises miraculous body-sculpting results with little to no effort. These hopeful purchases always end up in my attic waiting for the next garage sale. So when a sales rep for a local computer-training company first tried to sell me his services essentially as “free” through the Small Business Employee Training program (SBET), I was 100% skeptical and determined not to get suckered into his scheming web. But after a little investigation and research, I uncovered a true gem of government program that, over the years, has benefitted BBR immensely. And, yes, it really was FREE!

The basic premise of the program is this: If you are a Louisiana company, your employees can each take up to $3,000 worth of computer training courses per year and have those fees reimbursed by the state after the appropriate paperwork is submitted

4 Tips To Get You Through Your Digital Day

Filed under: Tips and Tricks — Eddie Talbot @ 4:34 pm

What do you think can make a difference to your day? Catching all the green lights on the way to work? Watching TV without commercials (well, you can actually do this, bad example)? Never having to wait in lines at the store? Being able to go 90 mph instead of 70 mph (legally) on trips? Sure, these could all help you gain more time in a fantasy world, but what practical, time-saving steps can you take to create a more realistic fix?

Considering most of us spend more and more time on a computer each year, devising ways to save time on them is a goal that is easy to accomplish. Realistically you can improve your day by simplifying repetitive tasks and taking a little time to organize yourself digitally. At the end of the day, it will help you to achieve the things you want to do instead of the things you have to. In reading this post, keep in mind the differences between Mac and PC. Some suggestions will be platform specific, but if it can be done on one, you can usually find a way to do it on the other.

NYC: Where placement is paramount

I was assaulted during a recent trip to New York City. Not in the traditional “rode the G train after dusk” sense, but in the same way millions of Manhattanites, Brooklynites (and Queensites?) are during their daily commute to … anywhere.

The culprit was outdoor advertising ubiquitously plastered across metro station walls, Taxis, subway cars and outdoor monitors that dwarf most government buildings from my hometown.

Based on an informal survey I conducted (with approximately 0.00006% of the population), there’s a bit of a love-hate relationship with the stuff. Vandals make statements by defacing subway pieces while hilarious New York-based bloggers keep me giggling with their witty rants. The friends I happened to be staying with — Brooklyn residents — admitted they appreciate a good campaign and that it really gets the city talking.

Design by day, illustrate by night. It’s not every day that I get to draw a comic for work. So you can imagine my glee when this comic-blog concept received a green light!

Adaptation in Media

How many of us sit in an office all day, working at breakneck speed in order to accomplish everything that must be completed within eight hours? How many of us take a break during that eight-hour day to just enjoy the little things?

The other day, I decided to take that break and enjoy a little fresh air on our office’s back porch. It faces a graveyard, which makes it a very peaceful if occasionally creepy setting. But this day was sunny and beautiful, and as I sat on the bench admiring the weather, I spotted the epitome of how nature survives. There, flitting across the grass toward a line of trees, was a lone squirrel. The odd thing about this squirrel was that he was struggling on his journey due to the load he was carrying — a miniature American flag attached to a dowel — that he had obviously swiped from a nearby grave. After much determination, he finally was successful in climbing a nearby tree to his nest, where I can only surmise he used the flag to make a cozy home. Since then, we have seen him participate in this act two more times — he must be creating a mansion in that tree.
